Would You Drink Pea Flavoured Softdrink?

December 1st 2006 00:25
peas

How would you react to the idea of drinking pea flavoured softdrink/soda?

Don't think it can't happen because it already has!
And don't make the mistake of thinking it's a one-off!

The latest pea flavoured drink is in good company alongside of other flavours such as:

* Salmon
* Dinner roll
* Sweet potato
* Broccoli casserole
* Corn on the cob
* Brussel sprout
* Fish taco
* Antacid flavour
* & not at all forgetting turkey with gravy.

The certifiably insane company behind this, is the Jones Soda company based in Seattle, U.S.A. Only in America, right!

I've heard that the CEO himself doesn't like the flavours, but they tend to sell out fairly quickly, so of course they keep on coming up with weird and wack flavours.

I guess it's that 'try anything once' mentality.

Personally, that's one taste test I can quite happily live without.

So hands up who'd try something with any of these weird flavours, and does anybody have any better suggestions?

Pea soup, yes, pea soft drink...no way.. ugh
and Fish Taco is just wrong....

Are these Americans mad? or mayhaps the old story of being consumed by consumerism..

Did I hear somebody call for a crazy American? The Jones sodas aren't half bad. Their fruit flavors are good. The other ones are fun to pass around at a party.

I hadn't even heard of a fish taco before, and just the idea of that puts me off, well before the idea of drinking one!

As for the broccoli one, I would have thought that seeing as it's hard enough as it is to get most people to eat those, that that one would well and truly be a fizzer. ; )

Could be a good idea to put kids off that won't eat their vegetables though. "Yes, sure you can have a soda - better make it a broccoli casserole one though!". ; )

Hi Melissa

That is just too weird. Honestly, they'll try to make money out of anything won't they.

Turkey with gravy? What are they thinking? Lamb and mint sauce would make a much tastier soft drink than that. Gravy is better with brussels sprouts ... it masks their flavour beautifully.

Maybe I should try bottling that!

MelissaA,

Great Post!

Humour me... no way I can get down that whole list in one sitting...I'll just start with the pea soda thanks... hmmm, actually I think it is rather refreshing [sounding] dependant on how much bloomin' sugar they add to it... maybe pea and ham would be nice, but of course amongst the upper crust its served flat, not fizzy... I can't say I'd go for it fizzy ... will have to wait and see, no doubt Australia will do another lemming run on this one!

*LOL* Lilla. Actually, you might be on to something there. Considering the other suggestions, I imagine pea and ham might be quite conservative.
Especially compared to the antacid one!

Comment by MelissaA

December 1st 2006 07:48
Lily, I have to confess that the only reason I had to cook the roast was that it would have very possibly been off by tomorrow.
I wasn't counting on today being a hot one, but with the weather these days, I really should have known better.

It was very nice though, and one of the kids discovered the wonders of gravy.

As for Christmas, yes, you're right about that. Just how many people do go the whole hog for Christmas with the big roast dinners while it's boiling hot!

We actually cheat at Christmas by sticking to cold ham and turkey along with the occasional meal of prawns.

The only Christmas cooking I've ever done is Christmas biscuits, usually done with the kids a day or two beforehand, and once I did stuffed zucchini on the day, just so I can say I did once cook something for Christmas. ; )

Oooh, I just had a new one pop into my head.....
How about cheese & bacon?

Comment by Nina

December 1st 2006 09:53
None of those sound particularly appetising, I think the only one I would consider trying would be turkey and gravy out of pure curiosity. Your cheese and bacon suggestion could be interesting though. They could even go for some more exotic cheese flavours, like swiss, brie or feta.

As I'm always being heard said "Eww Peas taste Yuck.". I don't even eat peas so no chance of me drinking them. As for the other flavours, I've heard of crisps making these flavours but as a drink... weird. OH well there will be some mad person out there to drink them no doubt.

Has someone already mentioned Bertie's everything-flavoured beans, or whatever they are -- you know, those sweets in Harry Potter that taste of vomit, earwax, etc...

This post was coincidental, incidentally. Someone just offered me a can of wasabi-flavoured dried peas. I think the expression on my face must have been priceless.

December 1st 2006 17:31
Half-wondering, when I clicked on this post, whether you'd misspelt "pea"...

...

Some people would buy it anyway.

I'd probably be one.

Though I don't know if I'd drink it.

Comment by MelissaA

December 2nd 2006 01:48
So you would try them hey Brenton?
Well that's one person so far........anyone else? Well Adele might if she's passing them around, or would she only be interested in watching other people drink them.
That could be quite fun actually. ; )

Sarah, refer to the comment before yours for the one mad person. ; )

Comment by MelissaA

December 2nd 2006 01:51
Adrian, that's funny. Be careful there though, someone from the company may be spying and thinking....'Hmmmm...earwax....not bad!"

I had the thought of the other pea cross my mind as well, so you weren't the only one.

As for wasabi peas....... Brenton would probably drink that as a softdrink also!

I've read about this CEO and this company. It's hilarious. I'd buy it, because I'm a sucker for a gimmick.....I'd probably buy one of each flavour. I was going to say, 'but I wouldn't drink it', but the truth is, the curiosity would get the better of me and I'd have to try it.

Turkey and gravy is the only one that I think that might possibly not make me vomit.....but I'm not 100% sure on it.

I wonder how it would fare in the japanese market.

Well postmoderncritic, I certainly can't complain about them, after all this has been my most popular blog to date. I have often eyed off everyone else in the top 10 list and wondered when, if and how I would ever have a chance to get up there myself.

Obviously I don't get too many comments being fun facts, I mean, what really is there to comment on most of the time, but this one certainly has been fun.

Now I'm wondering if I can top it off by cracking the 200 mark in votes as well! : )

KylieW, if you had said you wouldn't have drunk them after buying them, then I would have asked you why on earth you were even buying them. ; )

I think if I ever was to buy something as ridiculous sounding as these, I probably would just use them on my unsuspecting friends first so I can gauge their reactions.

That's just the sort of loving, sharing friend I am. ; )

Vixter, the vodka you've suggested now gives me an idea1

After plying the above friends with the strange concoctions first in the caring, sharing way that I operate, I would then concievably load myself up on many varieties of alcohol before just maybe, conceivably trying the 'flavours' that received the smallest amount of grimaces.

I can see that in a situation like this, it may be possible that I could attempt one or two of these beverages, but up until then, no way!

As for your comments on the Japanese market, I would think they would do really well. The Japanese do seem to like crazy ideas like this.....

I found a can of asparagus juice, and I tried, to nauseating results:

asparagus juice??? would that make your wee smell like asparagus does...sorry to be so blunt but well it is the truth...now this is going to sound wierd but as a result of the Harry Potter franchise i have been obsessed with trying pumpkin juice...

BUT my thoughts are: would you have to cok the pumpkin before you jiue it? it would be like some sort of pumpkin gazpacho?
would it even jiuce uncooked?
How filling would it be?

am i just being ridiculous?

*LOL* Stanley and Always Eighteen!

Brenton, I can't even handle the spicy side on it's own - i couldn't even imagine mixing the two.

Ashish, have you tried weird things like this before?

Cibbuano, I wouldn't have gone near asparagus juice with a 40 foot barge pole but hey - you live and you learn I guess.In my case, you just proven my instincts to be spot on!

Vixter, I think asparagus is not only one of the things that makes for bad wee, but bad 'other stuff' as well in terms of getteing pregnant.......

Postmoderncritic, that reminds me of a fragrance I remember they tried to bring out years ago as a perfume.
I believe the name was something like "Bowling Green" or "Lawn Green", and you've got it - smelled exactly like grass!

One of my Korean friends gave me a pumpkin flavoured lolly, it was weird.. In the same league as those Jelly Belliles.
Honestly, I dont mind, as long the flavours are one's you are meant to eat.. unlike sweetened tar.. aka licorice!
