It Doesn't Just Happen In The U.S!

December 5th 2006 00:25
OK, so most of the silly or downright ridiculous laws do come from the U.S., but they're certainly not the only ones in the world who have gone down this road. Here are some of the more ridiculous laws from other places around the world.
gondala

Italy

* All gondolas in Venice by law, must be painted black unless they belong to a high ranking official.
* It is illegal to practice the profession of charlantry.
* A man may be arrested for wearing a skirt.
* It is an offence for women of 'ill repute or evil looks' to enter a cheese factory in the area of Ferrara.

Scotland

* In dealing with certain crimes, you are presumed guilty until proven innocent.
* It is illegal to be a drunk while in possession of a cow.
* If someone knocks on your door and requires the use of your residence, you must let them enter.
* You may not fish on Sundays.

France

* It is illegal in Antibes to take photos of police officers or police vehicles, even if they are just in the background.

Lebanon

* Men are legally allowed to have sex with animals so long as the animals are female. It is illegal to have sex with a male animal.

China

* In Beijing - Drivers of motor vehicles who stop at pedestrian crossings are liable to a fine of up to five yuan, or a warning.
* You must be intelligent to go to college.
* You will have to pay a fine for having more than one child.
* Women are prohibited from walking around a hotel room in the nude. A woman may only be naked whilst in the bathroom.

Saudi Arabia

* There are two highways between Jiddah and Ryadh. One of them is for Muslims, the other is for "infidels".

* If a Muslim travelling between Jiddah and Ryadh is also accompanied by an "infidel", then they are both required to use the highway used by the "infidels".

Hong Kong

* A woman is legally allowed to kill her cheating husband, only if she uses her bare hands. The husband's lover however may be killed in any manner desired.

Hi Melissa

It's unbelievable, isn't it. The Chinese ones are good, although the sex with animals one made me giggle. If a man is deranged enough to want to fornicate with beasts then he's highly unlikely to wander around looking for a female one.

Some great laws there.

It does make you wonder doesn't it.

Personally I like:
The Scottish one with the cow. (what's all that about?)

The Chinese pedestrian crossing one. ( What on earth are they there for then?)

And of course the Hong Kong one. ; )

Some great ones there! I particularly like that in Lebannon a man can only have sex with female animals. Bestiality is one thing.....but homosexual bestiality...I think not!!

You've given me a good laugh to start the day

Hey Mel A, I reckon you should retitle your blog "Fun facts, trivia, and urban myths" -- I'm pretty skeptical about some of those laws.

Other ones I reckon might have quite reasonable explanations.

So it's kind of like a Seinfeld routine. "Isn't it strange that..." but then some killjoy comes along and goes, "No, it's not strange, because of x, y, z"...

LOL, I like that last bit - it pretty much is like that!

And believe me, these are the simple ones - there are some laws out there - one I remember involving IVF treatments in Italy which are so complex that I just can't compact the idiocy down into a few lines.

Tell me, which ones are you sceptical about you sceptic you (for some reason I now feel like daffy Duck!) and I'll see if I can give you a good source on them.

Okay, what about this one --

"In Beijing - Drivers of motor vehicles who stop at pedestrian crossings are liable to a fine of up to five yuan, or a warning."

OK Adrian, I'm trying to find an 'official' site with English, not Chinese in it, but due to the language barrier, it's a little difficult as you may imagine.

I did fin another site run by a guy in Shanghai where it was mentioned as "Drivers of power-driven vehicles who stop at pedestrian crossings are liable to a fine of up to five yuan, or a warning." - Article 40 of the Beijing Traffic Laws.

Shall I keep looking for you? I will have to go do the school run etc soon and then I won't be around for a while.

Oh, and I also found this - it was once in the China Daily news.
"According to research, conducted by the Medical School of Jinan University in Guangzhou, the figure for all traffic accidents in China in 2003 was more than 770,000 with 110,000 people losing their lives and 560,000 injured.

Pretty scary stuff hey!

Hmm... I dunno, Mel. I tend to reckon it's either outright false (doesn't seem to make any sense; what's the pedestrian crossing for in the case?), or that the law is mistranslated -- for instance, it might be a fine relating to parking on a pedestrian crossing...

Hmmmm...I guess a mistranslation wouldn't be out of the question, but then again, I've seen some really ridiculous laws that I know are still in force and through official websites.

Even if you take that bale of hay in the taxi's one into account. Even Homer said it was still in force when he was a copper.

When I get a bit more time I'll have another look into it.

im pretty sure they have that french one in parts of china too, i believe tianannmen square at least is off limits for film and photography.
a few more to add here (though im not completely sure about their legitimacy). in france, it was once law that shopkeepers werent allowed to sell dolls that didnt have human faces and in venice, high heels were once illegal because of people falling into rivers and drowning.

My biggest problem now Adrian, is that I've become more than a little obsessed with finding out the true story of something else....check out tomorrow's and you'll see what I'm talking about.

ChrisM, I think I have heard of something like that before in China - actually I seem to recall that you're just not allowed to take photos of anything around Tianannmen Square, in particular, the square itself.

The Italian one's you've given certainly don't surprise me, but it's something interesting I can look into later, so thanks for that. : )

If you like some weird laws, try this these. In the country of singapore its a $500 fine to chew bubble gum. due to the out break of "Scars" a couple of years ago. It was a deadly flu that killed a couple of hundred people in asia. And I knew that the one in china was real but the one about killing
in hong kong was new to me. lol

* In dealing with certain crimes, you are presumed guilty until proven innocent.

Doesn´t that, unfortunatly, seem to be the case in alot of countries?

Lebanon
* Men are legally allowed to have sex with animals so long as the animals are female. It is illegal to have sex with a male animal.

This one made me laugh since here in sweden bestiality is perfectly legal as long as you don´t "physically hurt" the animal. Actually this happened not far from where I grew up. A man broke in to a barn and had sex with a pig and he only got charged for breaking and entering =)

LOL Anders 1 - I didn't know about that one - I'll have to ask my Swedish friends about that!

Isn't it weird (and interesting) what bizarre laws people can come up with?!

My favourite law hands down is in New York. In NewYork it's illegal to jump off a building. The punishment for disobeying this crime is death.
When I first saw this law I thought.......... Really? In a city of skyscrappers if you jump off a building, it's most likely your teying to kill yourself..... But the thing to remember about all the weird laws you may find is that most of them are old and outdated and probably not enforced.

they should do that around the world... but it should go both for both genders -.-

Hmm, I'm extremely skeptical about the HK one. I've been living in HK for years and I am pretty sure they don't have this kind of law. (although it sounds like a pretty good law to have, one more reason for women to learn KungFu) By the way HK government has an excellent online law database in both Chinese and English. Really Long Link

In China, the reason you have to pay a fine for having more than one child is because they are tring to keep the population down.

Ok i heard the hong kong one tonight, and i googled it to see if it was true. it is. and i found this one to be funny. It made it even cooler because i live in maine...... "Buckfield, Maine, has a rather unusual law regarding cab drivers and sex. The legislation declares that no taxi driver "will be allowed" to charge a fare to any passenger who gives him sexual favors in return for a ride home from a nightclub or other "establishment which serves alcoholic beverages," or any "place of business" selling liquor" this link has a ton of different punishments for adultry of things that used to happen, or laws that still do happen.
