Just so you know what's going on, I haven't been around for a while due to various issues, one of which is the steadily decreasing health of our family dog, who was left in the care of good friends back home while we were transferred overseas for a couple of years.

As the situation becomes progressively worse with the strong possibility of having to explain to our children why we may indeed need to put our beloved family friend 'to sleep', I of course am not really in a position to keep this blog up-to-date as of the moment.

So I ask you all to bear with me as I deal with this situation, and if anyone has any advice for me on how to handle this situation with children aged between 6 &10, I will surely take it in hand.

I have an idea, tell them he moved out. Just say he went to visit his family (in heaven) so you aren't "lieing". Have a little going away party and everything.

Just an idea.

I kinda wish my parents did something like that each time a pet passed. (we had 7 dogs, 25 cats, 1 love bird, 1 turtle, 4 chickens, 2 doves, 1 minah bird, 4 jackson chamelons and 8 fish. so there was a lot of heartache)

Try telling them that the dog is very sick, and in pain, so to make the dog feel better you are going to bring him to the doctors and they are going to put the dog into a deep, relaxing sleep so that he doesn't hurt anymore, and so that he can go to Doggy Heaven. Then buy a puppy. Who doesn't love a puppy?

The best advice I can give is to just be honest with your kids. There are many books out there that help to understand the loss of a pet. It is important to let your kids grieve on their own time and not to rush into getting another pet. Try doing a craft that helps them remember their dog. Maybe decorate a picture frame or make a paw print ornament. Collect some of his favorite things and donate them to your local animal shelter in memory of your dog. There is also a book that is a pet loss memory book where kids can write stories and put pictures and what not. Here are the names of other books for pet loss. Here are the names of 2 other books that deal with pet loss:

"I'll Always Love You" by Hans Wilhelm
"The Tenth Good Thing About Barney" by Judith Viorst

The name of the pet loss memory book is:
"Oh, Where Has My Pet Gone?" by Sally Sibbitt

Thanks all for your advice.

We did eventually have to have her put down.

My non-presence would have alerted you to that fact I'm sure.

But now I'm going to attempt to get things back on board.

Thanks to all of you who have stuck by the blog in this time, it's really been appreciated. : )

Melissa,

I am so sorry to hear about this.

Loss is always difficult, and I hope your kids took it well, as it is usually animals that first tech children about mortality, and it does hurt alot.

We have had mnay pets over the years, not one died naturally, they all had to be euthanised.

Pity we have not the same compassion for humans.

cheers and I hope your household is recovering.

P.S. Maybe the kids would like to make a little 'monument' or some such in the backyard (if you have one there) as a way of celebrating Chloe's life and giving some sense of farewell?
