Solar System Fun Facts: part 1

The next two days of fun facts are going to be science based and about the solar system, with a fun fact on each planet and an extra one for the moon. So to kick us off, here is the solar system part 1:
Mercury - is the planet in the solar system which moves the fastest. It travels at about 172 thousand km/h, which makes it very, very fast indeed.
Venus - is the hottest planet in the solar system because of an impressively large greenhouse effect which makes it even hotter than mercury, which is much closer to the sun.
Earth - is the only planet that is not named for a connection to Greek or roman mythology. It is actually based on an old English or Germanic word.
And our little guest - The moon - While the first man on the moon was in 1969 it was actually visited by a spacecraft called "Luna 2" 10 years earlier, in 1959.
Mars - At one stage people thought that intelligent life may have built canals on Mars. Would have been much more interesting if they had turned out to be right. (And more dangerous if War of the Worlds is to be believed.
