No Ribbing, The facts About Ribs!
April 18th 2007 00:25
The human body holds 12 pairs of ribs.
There are 3 different types:
* True ribs
* False ribs
* Floating ribs
All of your ribs attach to your spine, but only the top seven pairs or 'true ribs, connect to your sternum or breastplate.
The next three pairs below are 'false ribs'. They all attach to your lowest true rib instead of your sternum.
The last two pairs of ribs are called 'floating ribs'. These attach to your spine only.
The gaps between ribs are known as intercostal spaces, they have thin sheets of muscle to help expand and relax the chest when breathing. Breathing for a year makes your ribs move about 5 million times.
Rib bones themselves are quite fragile even though their main purpose is to protect vital organs such as the heart and lungs, and can be easily broken not only in accidents, but also by violent bouts of sneezing. Broken ribs can be very dangerous, as they could puncture your heart or lungs.
Approximately 25% of rib fractures are not revealed by X-rays.
Simple breathing can cause extreme pain with rib injuries. Rib fractures generally take four to six weeks to heal. Over that time, a gradual reduction in pain will occur.
