New Years Resolutions - The Facts

January 3rd 2007 00:30
chocolate

During this week, millions upon millions of people around the world will be formulating their New Years Resolutions.

Here's how things usually end up.

63% of people are still keeping their resolutions after the first two months.

67% of people actually make 3 or more resolutions.

The top resolutions usually involve promises to exercise more (37%), increasing the time devoted to study or work (23%), losing weight, stop smoking or drinking (alcohol and/or coffee), and eat healthier.

People make more resolutions to start a new habit (84%) , than to break an old one (16%).

65% of people made their resolutions between the 28th of December and New Year's Day. The rest usually take up until the end of January.

Of those who successfully achieved their top resolution, 40% of them did so on the first attempt. The rest made multiple tries, with 17% finally succeeding after more than six attempts.

So what will your resolutions be for 2007, and do you think you can achieve them?

I'm actually surprised at the number of people sticking to their new years resolution after 2 months.

For about 10 years, my sisters new years resolution was to get to a certain weight (one that was ridiculously light for her frame). She finally reached that goal for about a week last year and looked really gaunt. So she's given that one away now. This is the first year that I can remember that her resolution wasn't related to weight. It shocked me!

My standard new year resolution is to have more fun. Though this year I decided to do an actual resolution. Mine was to do more freelance writing and to actually finish off the draft of the novel that I've been toying around with for a while now. Oh yeah, and to lose weight, exercise more, and eat healthy : )

KylieW, how does it go - "be careful what you wish for, you might just get it!". ; )

I don't do New Years resolutions as such, I just try to start off the year with a healthier attitude all round. So instead of picking one particular thing I just try to apply a new start to everything.

Right now I'd be happy with getting the painting finished that we're currently doing in a couple of the bedrooms. ; )

HI MelissaA,

I haven't made any for years, since I quit smoking in 2001.

This year, I've got a couple brewing again and have dedicated the year to visitng the dentist. I usually avoid him like the plague but during the past year or two, I have developed a couple little niggling aches here and there and will go and get them sorted. Luckily he gives gas and valium for chickens...

Oh and I was going to blog less... too many hours does it take [sorry rewatching Star Wars Saga at the moment and starting to talk like yoda again!].

Yes, less time blogging, more time writing... but it's such fun, it's addictive!

What are yours for '007?

Well as I said Lilla, I don't really do them - I just try to have a healthier attitude all around.

This year I will be studying for uni - so I plan to make sure that I do it and do it properly.

I will also be working part-time - I started just yesterday, so i want to make sure I put enough effort in there, especially as I'm currently in the training period.

I want to try and keep my house a bit cleaner and mor organised after I've sorted out the current mess from paining.

I guess I'm just aiming for a good balance between kids, study, work, blog and without forgetting a little time for me. : )

Mine was to stay away from all forms of drugs (excluding prescribed ones) and alcohol.
I've been successful for over a year!
