Is The Great Wall Of China REALLY Visible From The Moon?
January 2nd 2008 09:57
Most of us I'm sure have heard the tale that the Great Wall of China is the only man-made object visible from the surface of the moon, but is this rumour actually fact or simply fiction?
In fact it is fiction in every sense of the word.
Book author Richard Haliburton claimed that this was a true fact in his book Second Book Of Marvels, printed in 1938. A marvellous tale indeed when you consider that it wasn't until 1969 that man actually made it to the moon!
Not only is the Great Wall not visible from the moon, but astronauts claim that the world's largest mountain ranges aren't visible either.
Neil Armstrong summed it up best when he commented that "I do not believe that, at least with my eyes, there would be any man-made object that I could see. I have not yet found somebody who has told me they've seen the Wall of China from Earth's orbit. ... I've asked various people, particularly Shuttle guys, that have been many orbits around China in the daytime, and the ones I've talked to didn't see it."
A helpful tip for those of you who might be visiting Beijing for the upcoming Olympic Games.

Well blow me down, how about that! I never actually even hought to question it.
I suppose it`s also dependant on if you believe that man has actually walked on the moon.
Questions, questions everywhere!

Well what d'ya know... and now I s'pose that the same rumour about the great Three gorges Dam also being visibile from the moon, is another tale larger than reality, too?

No, I haven't seen the Great Wall of China from the moon, and as far as I can see in my comment I didn't say I had. LOL

I didn`t say I don`t believe that men have walked on the moon.
Some people have that belief - I`m open to persuasion on the point. I don`t watch TV so am in no way influenced by it - I have a great interest in conspiracy theories and read them whenever I come across them.
For the same reason that you believe that they have walked on the moon there are people who believe it to be false - because someone said so - it just depends who is the most convincing in their argument.
Someone said the Great Wall of China was visible from the moon and a lot were sucked in. Just takes someone to question it I guess.

I think my irritation with the men not walking on the moon notion is that has sucked in such a lot of people. If this really was a hoax, it was the most incredible hoax of all time, not only vastly expensive, but able to take in everyone else who was involved in the space race. Pretty clever, if that's the case.

you got it! the lengths some people will go to... for no reason other than to fool the world... are truly amazing. If it is true, like you say, to even fool the so called experts - well!
The truth is out there....

Of course intelligent people will believe all sorts of things...including evolution (!) but let's not go there. LOL

I think it was Milgram who did a study on this after the war about people obeying figures in authority. Perhaps we just don`t expect others to lie to us - or we are all so used to being sheep that we don`t question.
have a good one Mike

People of my mother's generations were more prone to obey authority figures than we were: doctors were always right and not to be questioned, policemen knew the law and therefore couldn't do wrong; politicians knew how to run the country. How times have changed!
