TODAY Is LEAP DAY!!!

February 29th 2008 09:00
leaping frog
No it's not the day for leaping over lilyponds or frogs for that matter, instead it is the 29th of February, that strange 'extra' day that we receive once every four years when a 'Leap Year occurs'. So the date of February the 29th becomes known as Leap Day or Bissextile day.

So why do we have this phenomenon?

In a standard year of 365 days, the earth fulfils a complete revolution around the sun in 365 days and 6 hours. Because of the extra 6 hours, by the time 4 years rolls around, we have accumulated an extra 24 hours, so to keep our co-ordination with the sun, an extra day is added.

Traditionally, during a leap year, women can propose marriage to men. This stems back to the year 1288 in which the Scottish parliament under Queen Margaret legislated that any woman could propose in Leap Year.

If the man rejected the proposal he was to provide a kiss, one pound currency, and a pair of gloves.
