The ESKIMO OLYMPICS

March 6th 2008 09:42
In Fairbanks, Alaska during the later half of July every year, the WEI Olympics are held.

What exactly are the WEI Olympics? The World Eskimo Indian Olympics of course!

These are a a series of games based on the cultural traditions and survival skills of the Eskimos and Indians of Alaska.

Some of the more notable games include 'Ear Pulling', the 'Blanket Toss' and the 'Seal Hop'.

With the 'Ear Pulling' event, 2 people sit down facing each other with twine looped around each other's ear - right ear to right ear, left to left. The two then begin their own unique version of 'tug-of-war'.

During 'Nalakatuk', otherwise known as the 'Blanket Toss', the participants are bounced high into the air from the centre of a blanket of walrus skins, held around the edges by other participants, much like being on a trampoline.

The 'Seal Hop' or 'Knuckle Hop' as it's otherwise known, displays contestants 'crawling' along the floor in a "push-up" position, with elbows bent and knuckles down. Only knuckles and toes are allowed to touch the floor as the contestant "hops" forward as far as possible.

This year the event will take place from the 16th - 19th of July. You can find out more information on the games HERE.
