Fun Facts on Italy
May 7th 2006 05:27
I was going to do a fun fact entry on Italy, and I still will. However, after some research I found enough information on Mount Vesuvius in Italy to do a whole blog entry. So I'll kick off with some details on it.
Fact 1: Volcano
Mount Vesuvius is one of the few active volcanoes in Europe and it is famous for destroying the town of Pompeii in the year 79 AD.
This eruption lasted 19 hours and released 4 cubic kilometres of ash and rock, destorying a number of towns.
Many believe that the volcano is named after Hercules (who was at times referred to as Vesouvious - meaning son of Ves, another name for Zeus.)
Fact 2: Microstates
Italy, as a whole, is also an interesting place, containing two of Europe's five microstates. The first of these is the Vatican City, which most people know about, and the second is San Marino, which is a little less well known. A microstate is a very small, independent state and the Vatican city is the smallest microstate in the world, which makes it very small indeed.
Fact 3: Leaning Tower of Pisa
The Leaning Tower of Pisa also lives in Italy. This tower acquired it's lean due to small foundations in unstable soil...not very good engineering.
Join me tomorrow for more fun facts.
