Yesterday while setting up the lesson on lamingtons, I began thinking back to my younger days and the tune of "Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars."

I couldn't remember what is what for exactly as I was pretty young at the time, but thanks to the wondrous combination of the Internet and YouTube, I was able to refresh my memory. It was the jingle used to sell GM Holdens during the 70's (showing my age now aren't I!), and it's stuck with me ever since.

For all those ready to reconnect with their Australian days of youth:

drinking tap water
OK, they say we need to drink 2 litres of water a day to help keep our bodies healthy, but how much truth is there to this really apart from the true fact that you'd constantly be going to the loo?

It turns out it's another one of those cases of Chinese Whispers.

meat
All sorts of strange and bizarre items have fallen from the sky in the past, but how would you feel if a lump of fresh meat landed in your lap?

In 1851 soldiers at a base out near San Francisco were practising drills when they were hit by blood and pieces of meat, from a cloudless sky.

EXPLODING COWS!!!

March 17th 2008 07:00
dairy cow cows freisan holstein
There is an urban myth that if a cow isn't milked it will explode. If this were true we would have all heard many reports of cows exploding in this way. However the milk load carried by a cow can be quite painful if it is not milked on a regular basis.

Dairy cows make milk for their calves and will keep on supplying milk until the need has run out. As milking on a regular basis makes the cow produce a steady stream of milk, she will keep on doing so until she is allowed to 'dry out' gradually before possibly beginning the calving season again.

UnRhymable Words

February 25th 2008 10:37
There are some words in the English language for which there is absolutely no rhyming counterpart. you might think that I'm talking about some obscure word in the dictionary like agathokakological. But no, I'm actually talking about common, every day, garden variety, words.

Try as you might, there is not a single word that rhymes with either:

CASHEWS! NUTS OR NOT REALLY!!!

December 11th 2007 00:05
With Christmas approaching, I know many of you will go more than a little nuts in a variety of ways.

One way of course, is in the simple pleasure of consuming nuts. Usually during the silly season a wide variety are readily on offer, but why is is that one of our most popular nuts , the humble cashew, doesn't have a shell?

Christmas shopping

Professionals at Deloitte have compiled the results of their annual survey, showing that the wet weather has dampened some of the expected results of Christmas shopping for 2007 in the UK, but overall British consumers are quite willing to fork out this Christmas, whilst also being very ‘canny’ about the items they spend their money on.

BANANA PEELS - SLIPPERY Little Suckers!!

November 14th 2007 10:09
Banana peels - touted all over the world as being slippery little suckers. Old wives tale or just another cliche?

Up until now, that's pretty much what I had thought and that the most fun you could have with bananas (aside from any dirty-minded thoughts) was throwing old, rotten bananas into ceiling fans. Don't believe me on that one either.......well as it happens, an entire class in my high school was given detention many years ago for that one....
