According to Sherri Ly of My Fox DC, when it comes to airport customs, drugs aren't the only things smuggled into airports as discovered on a visit to customs staff at Dulles International Airport.

As with customs in Australia, passengers are asked to declare any items of food, animal parts, etc in their luggage, and as we've seen on shows like Border Security, some people fail to declare these items whether innocently or otherwise.
One fairly innocent example at Dulles happened to a traveller from South America who was asked by customs about the emblem on his hat. The passenger claimed he didn't have an emblem on his hat. As it turned out he'd unknowingly picked up a stowaway - a deadly scorpion.

Other items at Dulles have included a smoked whole monkey, two full length raw cow legs, roasted hamsters, a dead fruit bat and a tree wrapped in aluminium foil. You can read the full story here.
