Do Cows REALLY Fart The Most METHANE Gas???

Methane.

You may think that most methane, a greenhouse gas, is in the natural world, emitted by cows.

However, you'd be wrong, along with the number of people who think that cows pass methane by farting when actually it' belching that does the job.

No, the most potent producers of methane in the natural world are actually termites!

That's right, milliions upon millions of tiny little wood harvesters on a very fibre rich diet are responsible!

Hello, My name is Tirta.

I think you are not correct, according to what I know. Termites eat sugar fiber (wood etc) with the help of a special digestif enzymes that crack down those long sugar chain (polypetides) toa simple sugar form that they could easily eat. They dont produce any kinds of methane gas.

Cow does produce methane gases because the bacteria in cows digestive system fermented the food. You could see the different here. termites dont have a fementation bacteria, so they dont produce any sort of methane gases.

Hi Tirta,

It's a well known scientific fact that termites do indeed produce methane.

Methanogens in termite guts are the source of methane released by termites. The discovery that termites are a significant source of atmospheric methane is attributed to the work of Patrick Zimmerman and his research group members at the National Centre for Atmospheric Research in the U.S.

In fact the very reason I posted this particular fact was because I saw it on a very well known and respected program over here in the UK just a few nights ago.

Cheers,
M.
