SORRY BUT I'M NOT DEAD YET!!!

August 20th 2008 23:45
gravestone headstone
People who reportedly 'died' before they did!

* Bertrand Russell (British mathematician) - reported in print as having died in 1937, had to have his obituary reprinted when he actually died in 1970.

* Mark Twain (author) - A US newspaper reported that he had died in 1897. When someone attempted to confirm the grim news, they were met by a living, breathing Twain who uttered the famous words..."Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

* Lord Baden Powell (Scouting Founder) - reported as having been shot for spying during WW1, died in 1941 while not spying in WW2.
It has actually been said that during WW1, even though he volunteered his services, he had been given no orders to follow as Lord Kitchener stated that "he could lay his hand on several competent divisional generals but could find no one who could carry on the invaluable work of the Boy Scouts."

* Alfred Nobel it is said came up with the idea of the Nobel Peace Prize after the appalling report in a French newspaper of his death in 1888. He thought his obituary sounded that bad that he decided to have his legacy live on in a more positive light! He died just 8 years later.

In 2001, Yiannis Katsanis, a Greek millionaire passed away leaving a rather disturbing clause in his will. Disturbing that is, for his relatives and the people of his hometown, Afitos.

The will stipulated that the sum of two billion drachmas ($5.28 million) was to be bequeathed to the town to aid in the construction and running of a new hospital, on the proviso that detailed letters he had written about the sexual exploits and affairs of his relatives and other townspeople were to be read out in public at the town square.

IT FELL From The SKY II! MONEY

July 4th 2008 10:15
In 1968, shoppers in Kent, UK, were surprised by falling coinage on the footpath. Apparently they came from nowhere with only the sound of them hitting the ground alerting the shoppers to their presence, and the dents in them backed up the story that they had fallen from the sky. There were no tall buildings or planes nearby.

In 1976 over a Piazza in Rome, a light plane dropped a large quantity of 500, 1000, and 10000 lira bank notes. The pilot of the plane was never identified.

So Who Knows Japanese???

March 15th 2008 09:00
OK, I'm not giving out a fact for today, unless I can say that it's a fact that this is seemingly idiotic, but actually I need someone out there in cyberspace to explain this one to me?!?!

flag of Japan Japanese
So if there are any Japanese speakers around, you can probably help me out with this rather bizarre little man and his website. I know the Japanese have a reputation for having a bizarre sense of humour, but can someone explain to me what he's saying HERE?

Nessie
The Loch Ness Monster, affectionately known as Nessie, is actually under the protection of Scottish law.
The Scottish law of 1912 known as the Protection of Animal Acts In Scotland includes Nessie as one of the many creatures protected by its scope. Little wonder why really when you realise that in terms of Scottish tourism, Nessie is estimated to be worth $40 million a year!

1. Calchas was a Greek soothsayer during the time of the Trojan War.
One day he was planting grapevines when another soothsayer wandered by and foretold that Calchas would never drink the wine produced from the grapes. After the grapes ripened and the wine was made, Calchas invited the soothsayer to share it with him. As Calchas held a cup of the wine in his hand, the soothsayer repeated the prophecy. This incited such a fit of laughter in Calchas that he choked and died.

A 45 year old man has been arrested and charged with stealing a local bridge.

The 5 metre, metal bridge was located just south of Moscow and spanned a small river. In what the police called the 'bulkiest theft of the year', the man who was employed as a truck driver, used his company vehicle to transport the bridge, which he then chopped up and sold off as scrap metal.
