Top Hats! A Menace To Society!!!

July 9th 2008 10:30
top hat
James Heatherington, the inventor of the top hat, introduced his design to the world in London during 1797.

Upon leaving the shop wearing his unusual headwear he was surrounded by a crowd of onlookers where some pushing and shoving ensued, resulting in women fainting and a young boy having his arm broken.

As a result of this, Heatherington was arrested, summoned to appear in court, and fined £50 for going about in a manner "calculated to frighten timid people."

Within a month, he was of course overwhelmed with orders for the new design.

Class distinction being what it is, only the less informed still call it a top hat. The middle classes referred to as a 'silk hat'. A gentleman always asked for a 'topper'.

Santa Claus/ Father Christmas/ St Nicholas/ Kris Kringle, whatever name you call him, this is one man of which it can be said he has many names.

Depending on the country you're in, he could very well be called more than one name. In Australia he's usually referred to as Santa Claus, but occasionally other names pop up.

There is really only one present my 8 year old daughter wants for Christmas this year having now relocated to the UK.

In short, after a number of smelly, sweaty, stinky Christmases in the Great Land Downunder, she wants to experience a 'White Christmas' ie. snow on Christmas day.

1. Calchas was a Greek soothsayer during the time of the Trojan War.
One day he was planting grapevines when another soothsayer wandered by and foretold that Calchas would never drink the wine produced from the grapes. After the grapes ripened and the wine was made, Calchas invited the soothsayer to share it with him. As Calchas held a cup of the wine in his hand, the soothsayer repeated the prophecy. This incited such a fit of laughter in Calchas that he choked and died.

As an Australian in the UK my cultural knowledge is ever expanding.

Take for instance my new knowledge of Britain's Harvest Festival, a cultural celebration of which I knew nothing about. I did however know about America and Thanksgiving. It turns out that the two are actually somewhat related.

Assorted Easter Facts

April 9th 2007 00:25
The first Easter baskets were made to look like bird's nests.

In medieval times a festival of egg-throwing was held in church, during which the priest would throw a hard-boiled egg to one of the choir boys. It was then tossed from one choir boy to the next and whoever held the egg when the clock struck 12 was the winner and retained the egg.
