Cost Of Gifts for 12 Days Of Christmas

December 6th 2006 00:25
Have you ever wondered about the total cost of each item in the "Twelve Days Of Christmas" song?
turtledove

That is to say, if you actually went out and bought a pear tree, a partridge, 2 French hens, etc. How much do you think it would actually cost?

Each year a number of economists attempt to estimate the cost for all the gifts mentioned in the song.
The results by PNC Advisors who have been doing this study for 22 years, are as follows.

The Cost of the 12 Days Of Christmas for 2006.

* One Partridge in a Pear Tree: $144.99 ($15.00 Partridge, $129.99 Pear Tree)

* Two Turtle Doves: $40.00 ($20.00 each)

* Three French Hens: $45.00 ($15.00 each)

* Four Calling Birds: $479.96 ($119.99 each)

* Five Gold Rings: $325.00 ($65.00 each)

* Six Geese-a-Laying: $300.00 ($50.00 each)

* Seven Swans-a-Swimming: $4,200.00 ($600.00 each)

* Eight Maids-a-Milking: $41.20 ($5.15 each)

* Nine Ladies Dancing: $4,759.19 ($528.80 each)

* Ten Lords-a-Leaping: $4,160.25 ($416.02 each)

* Eleven Pipers Piping: $2,124.00 ($186.66 each)

* Twelve Drummers Drumming: $2,224.30 ($193.09 each)

The grand total of the song for 2006 - $18,920.59 And that's in U.S.dollars! In Aussie dollars, that amounts to $24,065.03.

The survey has also included an internet component to keep up with the fact that a lot of gifts are now purchased online.
By buying all of the above gifts online,the price jumps quite significantly to a whopping $30,330.49 U.S. or $38,578.56 AUD!

That's one exceedingly expensive year!

When I was a kid, I had a '12 Days of Christmas' picture book, and I thought the Maids-a-Milkin were pretty cute!

I'll tell you what. Those poor maids-a-milkin' don't get paid much, do they.

I think I'll stick with the stuff I'd planned to buy all along ... this is all a wee bit too expensive for me.

What species are the calling birds? They're pretty expensive, even more expensive than a gold ring (unless it's not real gold).

It's real gold alright R.C., but there was no mention of carat that I saw, so it's probably only 9ct.

A.H. Even if I had the money, I wouldn't have the room in my house!

Cib. (yes I'm going backwards here) How old are we talking here - 4 or 14? ; )

Very amusing and interesting post Melissa. So a lady dancing costs $528.80 each, eh? Where exactly did they go to come up with that estimate

I got quite a lot of good green tea as a gift and will use that as presents. Cheap, tasty and good for the health.

Hope, I can't remember the details exactly, but I think they got that figure from an entertainment/talent agency.

No Vixter, I don't think you get to keep them, I'm sure that costs extra. ; )

Deorre, I'm always happy to help out. ; )

Hans, so what you're saying is that you were given one present, which you are now going to divide up into (just how many?) presents for other people? ; )

Yes but, if the cost was for the tue verse of song, it would be considerably greater.

oK. Day 1 partridge

Day 2, 2 turtle doves and a partridge

Day 3, 3 french hens, 2 turle doves and partridge; so by this time the gifts are 3 FH, 4 TD and 3 partridge.

Day 4, 4 calling birds, 3 french hens, 2 turtle doves and partridge. So by the end of day 4.
4 CB, 6 FH, 6 TD and 4 partridge have been given as gifts.

Thus the house is now getting very full.

So to day 5
5 gold rings, 4 calling birds, 3 french hens 2 turtle dove and anther bloody partridge.
So we now have roaming around the house.
5 Golden rings, 8 calling birds, 9 French Hens 8 Turtle doves and 5 partridges.

So as you can see by the time that you get to double figures, well your true love will be well pissed off with all the crap that has to be cleaned up. And well, were do you end up putting 12 pear trees in the middle of winter.

So by the 12 day, hey, 40 maids milking IN THE HOUSE, I will pressume that cows come with thse as well.

Also, trying to find a quiet space in the house would i pressume be quite difficult

The reason I go on is that, many moons ago, I saw on TV a rendition of the scenario above. OK, I'm talkin about 25yrs ago.
BUT.....does anybody out there know of the name of this great piece of comedy.. If you get the chance watch.

But.. If you do know name Drop a line

*LOL* Anonymous, I don't even think the financial advisors are crazy enough to touch that one.

But how big a house would you need for all of that?! It could be a wee bit crowded. ; )

Do you remember anyone who was in it?

Sorry, there were only 2 main characters as I remember. The main comedy bit was focused around this bloke turning up each day with a menagerie of animals and stuffing them into a very full house.
I was quite young at the time, so memory might have been lost a little.

So alas I have no more pointers to this comical farce.

all the best

You would have to multiply some stuff to get the true price

As Anonymous quoted each day you are recieving multiple of some gifts. By my research the tolal bill is $72,660. Another comment just made me realize that to have Maids-a-Milking you should be providing each maid a cow and that would add approximatly an additional $1000 per maid. It just keeps adding up.
