Christmas SPENDING HABITS Of The UK 2007!!!

December 10th 2007 00:05
Christmas shopping

Professionals at Deloitte have compiled the results of their annual survey, showing that the wet weather has dampened some of the expected results of Christmas shopping for 2007 in the UK, but overall British consumers are quite willing to fork out this Christmas, whilst also being very ‘canny’ about the items they spend their money on.

66% of consumers are expected to avoid some retail crush by purchasing some gifts online, with 14% (over 7 million people!) of those doing the majority of their shopping online, twice the number of 2006. Men are also more likely to shop online than women.

Overall it is expected that the total spent by British consumers this year will amount to 33.6 billion pounds, or in other words an average of £706, 7% more than last year, with 2% or £385 of this amount being for gifts. Socialising accounts for the majority of the monetary increase, especially with older age groups.

Contrary to popular belief about the Scottish being tight-fisted in terms of money, they, along with other northern Brits, spend ore than their southern counterparts.

80% of Brits pay for their mounting Christmas bills with cash or a debit card, while men and the over 55’s are more likely to use credit.

Boys are expected to receive more expensive gifts than girls due to the range of high-tech toys and gadgets.

Men are more likely to leave their Christmas shopping up until the last minute with one third shopping on Christmas Eve, while 42% of women will start doing their Christmas shopping before November.

Pensioners are the most likely demographic to begin their shopping very early, while Southern Brits are more likely to leave it to the last minute.
