The Day Your Birthday Falls On???

October 20th 2006 00:01
Something I’ve always wondered about is that when you have a birthday,
Birthday Cake
people will say that you share the same birthday with such-and-such-a-person, usually of some well known or celebrity status, but how does that really work with international date lines?

You might be born on the 20th of October for example, and on the other side of the world somebody else is born the next day, but because of the dateline, they are also noted down as being born on the 20th of October even though they may be an entire day behind you.

So if you were to work out who was born on the same day as yourself, would you just consider anybody born on that date according to their birth certificate to be born on the same day as you, or would you compensate for the time difference and say that maybe the people born on October the 19th on the other side of the world are born at the same time as you instead. Or maybe some people even add them together - just to make it a little more confusing?

Here is a list of people born today on the 20th of October.

Sir Christopher Wren, 1632 – Architect, mathematician and astronomer. Wren designed 53 London churches, including St. Paul's Cathedral and his scientific work was highly regarded by Sir Isaac Newton and Blaise Pascal.

Thomas Hughes, 1822 - English author & lawyer. He is most famous for his novel Tom Brown's School Days.

Arthur Rimbaud, (Jean Nicolas Arthur Rimbaud) – 1854 - a French poet, born in France. His life was dramatized in a film called Total Eclipse starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

Charles Edward Ives, 1874 - One of the first American composers of classical music.

Bela Lugosi, 1882 - Actor, best known for his role in the movie Dracula.

Fayard Nicholas – 1914 - one of the two famous Nicholas Brothers, a famous African-American tap dancing team who appeared in several movies.

Arthur "Art" Buchwald , 1925 - American humorist and Pullitzer Prize winner best known for his long-running column in The Washington Post newspaper, which concentrates on political satire and commentary.

Mickey Charles Mantle , 1931 - American baseball player who inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.

William (Bill) Christopher, 1932 - Actor – best known for his role as Father Francis Mulcahy on the TV Series M*A*S*H.

Jerry Orbach, 1935 - Actor - best known for his role as detective Lennie Briscoe on the TV Series “Law & Order”.

Earl Hindman, 1942 - Actor – best known as the always partially hidden next door neighbour in the TV Series Home Improvement.

Tom Petty, 1950 - Musician - Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers

Aaron Pryor, 1955 Boxer "The Hawk" – Former World Junior Welterweight champion

Viggo Mortensen, 1958 - best known for his acting role in "Lord of the Rings"

Snoop Doggy Dogg, 1972 - Musician

But seeing as all of the above were born on the other side of the international date line, does it mean that this list below is really who was born on my birthday??? (OK, I confess, that’s where the sudden interest to compile it into a blog came from) And that I should discredit the list above?

Or does that just confuse the issue more because technically they’re listed down as being born on the 19th of October although I could very well have been born at the exact moment of one of these?

Jack Anderson, 1922 - American newspaper columnist and Pullitzer prize winner, considered one of the fathers of modern investigative journalism.

Chuck Berry, 1926 - One of the pioneers of rock & roll music.

John le Carré (David John Moore Cornwell) 1931 - English novel writer.

Robert Reed, 1932 - Actor – best known for his role of Mike Brady on The Brady Bunch.

Jeannie C. Riley, 1945 - is an American country singer best known for her major hit "Harper Valley PTA".

John Lithgow, 1945 - Actor - best-known for his role as Dick Solomon in the 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Evander Holyfield, 1962 - Professional US boxer from the United States

Yeah, I've always wondered about this too. (Happy birthday, by the way.) I think if you share a birthdate with someone, then you use your first list since you're all born on October 20 by your respective calendars. If you want to get pedantic about the term "sharing a birthday", then you use the second list. The problem with this is which 24-hour period you use as the reference for your birthday. Ow, my head hurts. I don't think I made much sense. Sorry.

This shows you can make anything complicated if you really try.

Actually Ragin Cajun, (and thanks for the birthday wishes too by the way) that makes plenty of sense in one way - I guess it just shows how it's all a matter of perspective.
As for your head hurting, you should have seen me trying to type it out without sounding like a complete fruitloop! (Partially yes, but not entirely.) ; )
