FOOTBALL, MEAT PIES, KANGAROOS AND HOLDEN CARS!!!

Yesterday while setting up the lesson on lamingtons, I began thinking back to my younger days and the tune of "Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars."

I couldn't remember what is what for exactly as I was pretty young at the time, but thanks to the wondrous combination of the Internet and YouTube, I was able to refresh my memory. It was the jingle used to sell GM Holdens during the 70's (showing my age now aren't I!), and it's stuck with me ever since.

A LESSON IN LAMINGTONS!!!

The chocolate Lamington is as Australian as meat pies, kangaroos and Holdens. (Who else remembers that song/chant from way back when - "Football, meat-pies, kangaroos and Holden cars...?")

For years lamingtons have been a way of putting stale or over-cooked sponge cake to good use, but where did it actually start?

Who knew cup sizes could vary so much related on your country of birth, and what does this have to do with the average woman (or man) who likes to spend a lot of time in the kitchen?

Well, it may not mean anything to some, but for those of us who dabble in international recipes it can make a world (no pun intended) of difference!

In both the United Kingdom and the United States of America, turkeys are the currently the main choice for Christmas dinner.

In fact, before turkeys became popular in the UK, it was the custom to eat goose. Then during one particular Christmas, British monarch Henry VIII decided to try a turkey dinner.

Food Definitions and Differences UK-USA-Australia!

You might think the English language to be the same world over in English speaking countries, but not so.

The range of variations is quite wide between say Australian English, British English and American English.

FAIRY BREAD - A Cultural DELICACY???

OK, so here's the story..... something that I, like may other Aussies have grown up with is the simple idea of taking buttered bread and sprinkling it with either multi-coloured Hundreds & Thousands, or multi-coloured Sprinkles.

So we move to the UK, are in temporary accommodation and Miss 5-almost-6 is about to have a birthday. Hmmm, we need something simple and easy for her classmates to share with her on this auspicious occasion that requires no cooking due to lack of cooking equipment, and won't cost a fortune, especially with the conversion rate.
