Ants don't sleep.
Ants live in colonies with up to 500,000 neighbour ants.
Ever wondered why ants all follow the same path? When ants go out looking for food, they lay down a trail of pheromones Hansel & Gretel style so that the other ants can find their way between the nest and the food.
Worker ants can live up to 7 years and the queen may live as long as 15 years.
There are over 4500 described species of ant in the world.
Most unknown species of ants are found in the rain forests but because of rainforest destruction most of them will probably never be identified.
Male ants die after mating.
Queens either start new colonies alone or leave with workers from the old nest.
Queens starting out on their own do not have a lot of food so the first workers are normally smaller than those of a big nest.

I had no idea simple ants did so many interesting things...I know they're the only other living things on Earth who wage all out warfare besides human beings and chimpanzees, but this stuff was fascinating...
Great post!
Take care,
Nick
