Australian Slang Translations

Australia map
With Australia Day occurring tomorrow on the 26th of January, I thought some Aussie lingo or Australian definitions might be in order for the overseas onlookers.

I will point out though that some of the most commonly occurring slang is due more to the shortening of words. In these cases they are generally shortened and then a suffix is attached to the end. Such as:

A cup of tea or coffee becomes a Cuppa.
Angela becomes Angie.
Sunglasses become Sunnies
Australians become Aussies
Barbecue becomes Barbie
Damien becomes Damo

But sometimes the words are run together and shortened, like the ever popular "G'day" in place of "Good Day".

Here is a list of other types of Australian slang. I tried to have at least one for every letter of the alphabet, but I couldn't think of any for "K", "Q", "X" & "Z". Maybe someone else can suggest one....

"A few kangaroos loose in the top paddock" - as in "he has a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock." similar to a sandwich short of a picnic" and "The lights are on but nobody is home". Or in simpler terms, they're just not to bright in the mental capacity stakes, someone who is mentally 'not altogether there, or "the full quid."

As dry as a Dead dingo's donger - (one of my personal favourites for introducing to overseas visitors ; ) ) - to have a dry throat.

"Back of Bourke" - a long way away from wherever you are, especially if it's 'out in the sticks" and reasonably away from civillisation.

"Bloody oath!" - that's so true.

Buckley's or Buckley's chance - no chance as in "England stands Buckley's of ever beating Australia at cricket."

Budgie smugglers-: men's swimming costume.

Cark it - die.

Cack - As in "I cacked myself". Laugh so hard that you might drop a #2 in your dacks (poop your pants).

Donkey's years – hasn’t happened in many years.

Empties- empty alcohol bottles.

Fair suck of the sav! - Disbelief.

Fair crack of the whip or "Fair Go" - to give some one a fair opportunity.

Flat out like a lizard drinking -: very busy.

Gutfull - as in " I've had a gutfull", I've had enough!

Galah - idiot or silly person. Named after the bird.

Grog – booze, alcohol.

Haven't got a brass razoo - no money.

I'm easy - not worried, happy to let someone else make a choice.

Jack of something - sick and tired of something or doing something.

Lucky Country - Australia of course!

Mate - friend.

No worries! : Expression of forgiveness or reassurance.

Off one's face -: drunk, as in"He was off his face by 11pm on Australia Day!"

Outback - the harsh interior of Australia.

Pig's arse! - I don't agree with that!

Piss - beer, as in "out on the piss","hit the piss", "drink some piss", and of course not forgetting "pissed" or "pissed as a newt" - getting drunk.

Plumber's crack - the unfortunate line of bum cheek division that hangs out over the top of the tradesmen's pants, especially when bent over.

Rellies or rellos - family relatives.

Sanger - a sandwich.

She'll be apples - everything will be alright.

Shoot through - to leave.

Technicolor yawn - vomit, especially after having been out on the piss.

Thongs - rubber sandals. ( I don't care what anyone else says, a thong is not that dental floss that some people wear right up their plumbers crack!)

Up oneself - as in "she's really up herself", or she has a high opinion of herself.

Veg out - relax in front of the TV and kick back.

Woop Woop - as in "he lives in Woop Woop" nickname for any small town far away.

Yobbo - an uncouth person.

Well, by the time you read this I should just be getting ready to leave work in order to travel to Canberra in order to eat a few sangers and get on the piss at our nations capital to celebrate the national day of this, our Lucky Country.

I will be good though and not leave my empties lying around like some, and I will not get completely off my face (kids will be with us), so I don't expect to be cleaning up any technicoloured yawns, provided no Yobbo shows me a really extreme and hairy plumber's crack, in which case I may well cack myself and possibly cark it.

I will be there however in national dress (thongs), not be up myself, and shoot through well before midnight before I turn into the right galah you all know me to be, although I will probably still have a few kangaroos loose in the top paddock. In order to account for this, yep, you guessed it, a pile of posts all set up and ready to go before I leave, so don't worry my crazy friends, I will still be here in spirit to annoy you with ridiculous pieces of information and other oddities, so have fun won't you all! ; )
