STRANGE AUSTRALIAN RACES

Australia
Australia hosts some strange races and sporting events. Here's a quick rundown of a few.

1. The Cockroach World Championship - Brisbane
Every Australia Day, the Story Bridge Hotel runs a cockroach race in Brisbane.


2. The Beer Can Regatta - Darwin
Every July or August , a race involving watercraft constructed out of discarded tinnies (beer cans).


3. Cane toad racing - Magnetic Island


4. The Camel Cup - Alice Springs


5. The Henley-on-Todd Regatta - Alice Springs
September every year, a race where bottomless boats are constructed so that their sailors can
run on foot.


6. Wife Carrying Championships - Singleton


7. Pig racing - Melbourne


8. The Nude Olympics - Maslin Beach
Every February with events such as tug-of-war, frisbee-throwing and a Best Bum competition.

Having been asked the other day whether we, as Australians, live in actual houses? (As opposed to what I don't know - tents perhaps???) I've decided to list some of the most common questions asked by visitors to Australia as were pointed out recently by one of our tourism websites.


Q: Does it ever get windy in Australia? I've never seen it rain on TV. How do your plants grow? (UK)

* In 1977, Alan Jones scored a surprise victory in the Austrian Grand Prix. Initially officials were going to play the Austrian anthem but then realised that Australia and Austria were not the same country. Unfortunately, they didn't have the Australian anthem so instead a local drunk played "Happy Birthday to You" on a trumpet.

* In 1983, the yacht "Australia II" ended the Americans 132 year dominance of the America's cup.
