I Was A Bit Peckish On The Flight!

According to Sherri Ly of My Fox DC, when it comes to airport customs, drugs aren't the only things smuggled into airports as discovered on a visit to customs staff at Dulles International Airport.

As with customs in Australia, passengers are asked to declare any items of food, animal parts, etc in their luggage, and as we've seen on shows like Border Security, some people fail to declare these items whether innocently or otherwise.
One fairly innocent example at Dulles happened to a traveller from South America who was asked by customs about the emblem on his hat. The passenger claimed he didn't have an emblem on his hat. As it turned out he'd unknowingly picked up a stowaway - a deadly scorpion.

Other items at Dulles have included a smoked whole monkey, two full length raw cow legs, roasted hamsters, a dead fruit bat and a tree wrapped in aluminium foil. You can read the full story here.

Yesterday while setting up the lesson on lamingtons, I began thinking back to my younger days and the tune of "Football, meat pies, kangaroos and Holden cars."

I couldn't remember what is what for exactly as I was pretty young at the time, but thanks to the wondrous combination of the Internet and YouTube, I was able to refresh my memory. It was the jingle used to sell GM Holdens during the 70's (showing my age now aren't I!), and it's stuck with me ever since.

A FISHY TALE!!!

March 4th 2009 10:57
Mobile phone
Recently a man who lost his phone on a beach had it returned to him after it was found inside the belly of a codfish.

Originally realising he had lost his phone at the beach, he had expected to never see it again, but then a week later his girlfriend's phone rang quite obviously displaying his old mobile number. On the other end was a fisherman who had been surprised upon catching and gutting a 25lb cod, to find a mobile phone inside.

Here are the results from PNC's 2008 Annual Christmas Index.

Many factors have been brought into play this year including the rising cost of fuel and a lowered demand for certain items. However while some prices have increased, others such as the Three French Hens are now selling at a bargain price.

Do YOU Have A SLIPPERY DICK?

November 28th 2008 23:45
Well - do you??? Or does it all sound a bit fishy to you - especially being on this blog which generally speaking is reasonably family friendly - I guess it depends upon how reasonable your family is.

OK - so the name isn't what it implies - I'm actually talking about Halichoeres bivittatus, otherwise known as the striped fish called 'Slippery Dick'. (it does make you wonder about the person who named it though!)

Beatrix Potter of Peter Rabbit fame once received a letter from a 6 year old child who wrote of his disappointment with her latest tale, the Tale of Pigling Bland.

The author then wrote a letter of apology to the child explaining that even though she had been quite ill at the time, her publishers had twisted her arm into producing her annual Christmas book.

computer mouse
This year the humble and much overlooked computer mouse turned 45 years old.

Douglas Engelbart at the Stanford Research Institute invented the first mouse in 1963. Looking more like a wooden box with a cord hanging out more than anything else, (pictured) the mouse was so named because it did look like it had the tail of a mouse running out of it.

FOOD COLOURING FRIGHT!!!

red color
Ever wondered where the red colouring in your alcopops, toppings, jams and strawberry milshakes come from?

Next time you visit the pantry or go out to eat you may want to consider this little tidbit of information. In some food products, and even shampoos, the reddish colouring is produced by the crushing of the tropical Cochineal beetle. That's right, beetles!
