QUICK TO SWOOP

June 26th 2009 11:19
Michael Jackson
With the announcement of Michael Jackson's death, I thought everyone was quick with the new jokes, (in fact some sites have gone down with the amount of traffic online today) but not as quick it turns out, as people are to begin selling off their Michael Jackson memorabilia on Ebay.

In fact I counted up to 15 pages newly listed from today before I stopped - the list is seemingly endless. (What colour will his ghost be by the way???)

Tickets for the concert that will never happen are also still up for sale and to ridiculous extremes such as number 330339900705 which is now well into the millions. Legitimate or not? You be the judge, but who's to say what will or won't be collectible in the future.

Levi's are NOT Really Jeans!

February 13th 2008 10:15
denim jeans
When Levi Strauss invented jeans during the late 1800's, he did not call his 'strange' pants denim jeans or even jeans at all.

Supposedly these strange trousers were originally made out of sailcloth and canvas for miners and prospectors to wear as they had been complaining about how their ordinary pants would stretch and split while on the job.

Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer
In 1939, the management of the Chicago based Montgomery Ward department store decided to ask one of their employees, Robert L. May, to compose a story book for the children visiting their store that Christmas.

Drawing on his own experiences as a child and drawing on the line of thought from Hans Christian Anderson's "The Ugly Duckling", Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer was composed, published and handed out to a total of 2.4 million children.

One Recently Recorded Coincidence!

August 15th 2007 00:35
record
After the recent death of the world's oldest person, a Japanese woman by the name of Yone Minagawa who died a this August 14th at the age of 114, the title has now passed to a U.S. citizen, Edna Parker, also 114 years old.

By sheer coincidence Edna, now the current world title holder, also shares her nursing home accommodation with the world's tallest living woman, Sandy Allen, who at her tallest measured height came in at 7'7 1/4" or 2.32m!

license plate
How many of us have ever received parking tickets? Well one guy certainly acquired more than his fair share in unusual circumstances.

In 1979, Robert Barbour of Los Angeles, decided he wanted to stand out from the crowd with a set of personalised number plates. Heavily into sailing, he was asked for 3 choices on the form for the plates. "SAILING" and "BOATING" were his only two choices, so he wrote down "No PLATE" in the 3rd option, meaning that if he couldn't have either of the first two, that he didn't want a personalised license plate at all.

I'm sure most (if not all) of you have cottoned onto the real story behind yesterdays post. Indeed there is nothing actually wrong with the skywalk. (Yes, it is real the only fabrication was the closing down again part.) So after yesterdays post I thought enlighten you with some other April fools day pranks of the past.

* The Guardian printed a supplement in 1977 praising the location of a fictional resort - San Serriffe, its two main islands (Upper Caisse and Lower Caisse), its capital (Bodoni), and its leader (General Pica). Intrigued readers were later disappointed to learn that San Serriffe (sans serif) did not exist except as references to typeface terminology.

Grand canyon horseshoe
Opening day for the skywalk
The brand-spanking new tourist attraction known as the Grand Canyon Skywalk will be shut down just a handful of days after it’s magnificent opening.

Designed as a major tourist attraction, the Grand Canyon Skywalk sits along the edge of the Grand Canyon overlooking the Colorado River. The horseshoe-shaped glass walkway is suspended 1,200 metres above the canyon, eclipsing the height of skyscrapers worldwide.

With Daylight Saving Time ending this weekend for some states of Australia, (That’s right boys and girls – be prepared to put your watches and clocks BACKWARDS one hour.)

I thought I’d remind you all of some relevant mishaps that can be found at webexhibits.org.
These are occasions when Daylight Saving Time caused slightly more than an issue or two due to the actual changing of the time.
