- A night of drinking will help you get to sleep but it will be a light, possibly restless and you won't dream much.
- After 5 nights of partial sleep deprivation,3 drinks will have the same effect on your body as 6 under normal circumstances.
- Primates like chimps, baboons and monkeys all sleep for 10 hours. we on the other hand sleep for an average 3 hours less.
- Ducks keep one half of their brain awake while the other half sleeps.
- Adults aged between 25 and 55 usually require 8 hours of sleep. Small children and teenagers need 10 hours and those over the age of 65 only need about 6 hours.
- Women need up to an hour's extra sleep a night compared to men.
- Feeling tired can feel normal after a short time. Those deliberately deprived of sleep for research initially noticed greatly the effects on their alertness, mood and physical performance, but the awareness drops off after the first few days.
- Before electricity adults slept nine to 10 hours a night with periods of rest changing with the seasons in line with sunrise and sunsets.
- As a group, 18 to 24 year-olds deprived of sleep suffer more from impaired performance than older adults.
- The extra-hour of sleep when clocks are put back at the start of daylight saving time in Canada has coincided with a fall in the number of road accidents.
