CALLING ALL INSOMNIACS!!!

November 12th 2007 11:16
sleep
To insomniacs one and all, you're not alone. Even some of the rich and famous have suffered throughout these tiring times, with a variety of interesting methods used to combat this sleep-deprived state.

1. W.C. Fields would sometimes stretch out in a barber's chair, complete with barbers towels to nod off.
On other occasions he could only get to sleep by lying out on his pool table.
On particularly bad nights, he could only fall asleep under a beach umbrella being sprinkled by a garden hose.

2. Theodore Roosevelt employed less drastic tactics, usually a shot of cognac in a glass of milk.

3. Marlene Dietrich, claimed that the only thing that could lull her to sleep was a sardine-and-onion sandwich on rye.

4. Tallulah Bankhead, hired young homosexual `caddies' to keep her company, and one of their most important duties was to hold her hand until she drifted off to sleep.

5. Amy Lowell, (poet) upon staying in hotels would hire 5 rooms - one for sleeping in, while the others above, below, and on either side, of her room empty and guaranteed to be quiet.

6. Mark Twain while staying overnight at the house of a friend, once threw a pillow at the window of the bedroom he was sleeping in (well, attempting to sleep in).
When the satisfying crash let in what he thought was fresh air, he fell asleep at last. In the morning he discovered that he had broken a glass-enclosed bookcase.

7. Groucho Marx began experiencing bouts of insomnia when the stock market crashed in 1929 and he lost $240,000 in 48 hours. When an attack of insomnia struck, he would phone people up in the middle of the night and insult them.
